Itinerary

Day

1

Arrival in Moshi

Evening: Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be transferred to your hotel in Moshi town. Meet your guide for a briefing on your upcoming trek and an equipment check to ensure you have all necessary mountain gear. Any missing gear can be rented on this day.

Day

2

Embarking on the Machame Route

Morning: Travel from Moshi to Machame Gate, where you will complete park formalities and meet your porters. Begin your ascent, following a steadily climbing path through a magnificent, dense rainforest. The trail is less traveled, so it may be overgrown in places and muddy underfoot.

Day

3

Ascending to the Shira Plateau

Morning: Continue your trek through the forest, ascending to the Shira Plateau. Enjoy rewarding views of the mountain, including Mount Meru rising in the distance.

Day

4

A High-Altitude Trek

Morning: Embark on a trek across high moorland, experiencing a change in the landscape and character of the climb. Traverse the southwest side of Kilimanjaro, passing beneath the Lava Tower and the final section of the Western Breach.

Afternoon: Reach camp, having spent the day at high altitude (up to 4600m). The "walk high, sleep low" approach will aid your body's acclimatization to the altitude.

Day

5

Ascending the Great Barranco Wall

Morning: Embark on a descent into the Great Barranco, a large ravine. Ascend steeply up the Great Barranco Wall, which separates the southeastern slopes of Kibo. The climb is long and tiring, traversing rocky terrain.

Afternoon: Pass beneath the Heim and Kersten glaciers and head towards the Karanga Valley. Enjoy a steep climb from the valley to Karanga Camp, situated at 3963m. For those feeling strong, an acclimatization trek to around 4200m can be undertaken before descending back to camp for the night.

Day

6

Reaching Barafu Camp

Morning: After a restful night and breakfast, embark on a challenging trek to Barafu Camp at 4640m. The climb will take you across desolate scree slopes with no vegetation. The steep terrain and altitude will make the hike demanding.

Afternoon: Upon reaching Barafu Camp, enjoy a meal and spend the afternoon resting in preparation for the long night and day ahead. Stay hydrated and warm. An early dinner will be followed by an attempt to get some sleep, as you will be waking up between 11pm and 12pm to begin the summit climb.

Day

7

Summiting Kilimanjaro

Morning: Embark on a challenging ascent to the summit, beginning around midnight. Hike steeply upwards through scree for 4-5 hours, gaining significant elevation. Enjoy spectacular views as you approach the crater rim.

Afternoon: Reach Stella Point (5739m) as the first rays of the sun illuminate the landscape. Take in the breathtaking views of the ice cliffs within the crater, jagged Mawenzi peak, and beyond. Continue for another hour to Uhuru Peak (5895m), the summit of Kilimanjaro.

Evening: Descend back to Stella Point and then down the scree slope to Barafu Camp for breakfast. Continue your descent to Millennium Camp for a well-deserved rest.

Day

8

Descending to Mweka Gate

Morning: Enjoy a gentle trek through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you will complete park formalities and receive your certificates.

Afternoon: After being met by your vehicle, return to your hotel in Moshi. Enjoy a hot shower, a day room before departure, or an overnight stay for a safari extension.
